This course is designed to cover classical problems in epistemology and contemporary responses to the various theories of knowledge. We will examine proposed definitions of knowledge and criteria for the possession of knowledge, along with the problems with these various proposals. We will also examine the debates over the structure of knowledge, e.g., how beliefs ought to be structured in order to justify other beliefs, etc.; whether justification is mind independent or not; how we might identify epistemic virtues and how they might be used to determine the epistemic status of various beliefs; how knowledge and justification are anchored in the world, or in testimony, memory, and perception. We will also consider various meta-epistemological issues that have arisen in recent debates, including topics related to naturalized epistemology.
