This course is an in-depth study and critical review of theories of political, social, and economic organization that have shaped Western social and political thinking in the 19th and 20th centuries. The philosophical underpinnings of ‘political theory’ will be explored through a close examination of historical events and the relationship between theory and practice. This course begins with the philosophical and historical foundations of modernity that leads to the major 19th and 20th century social and political thinkers that eventually give rise to the contemporary theories of technocracy.
